Why do I love dental sedation so much? It’s because it lets you achieve your dream smile whilst melting away your fears and anxieties.

In fact, dental sedation works so well that as well as calming your nerves, it prevents you forming short term memories.  What this means is that no matter how complex or distressing the appointment would normally be, you will remember very little if any of it!

How do you know if you’re suitable for sedation?

Dental implants are an incredible way to replace missing teeth.  In fact, they are currently the best method of replacement we have for your natural teeth.  Dental implants do minimal damage to adjacent teeth, restore function and can look incredibly natural.

Once your implant is fitted and functioning, it is incredibly important to make sure your implants are well looked after and maintained.  Consider them your third set of teeth, it’s incredibly difficult to give you a fourth!

It is possible to get complications around implants although it doesn’t happen often.  What is great news is that by keeping them clean and visiting our hygienist regularly, the risk of complications drops significantly.

I frequently get asked whether the all on four dental implant technique works

The simple answer is yes, absolutely.

The concept has been around since the early 1990′s and has been modified and refined.  One of the reasons I get asked this question a lot is because historically, the technique was considered very risky by the profession.  But years later and with an abundant amount of solid scientific evidence, it is considered one of the best ways to replace your teeth.

The concept is very simple, to give you a new set of teeth with the minimal amount of invasive work and to try to keep you out of dentures.  Most people walk into surgery in the morning and leave later that day with a new set of rock solid teeth

Many of you chat to me when you come in, and some people are surprised about some of my philosophies of life.  Perhaps you just weren’t expecting any?!

One of the things I believe, is that in one way or another we chose our emotional states.  We always have a choice about how we respond to different situations put to us.  We chose how we react.

If we chose our emotional states, we also make choices by our actions. How we respond determines our happiness

I see this philosophy penetrate all areas of life.  I see people daily who are unhappy with their smile and make conscious decisions and actions to make changes.  I see people who decide not to let the pressures of life get to them.

If we worry about the things we have no control over, we waste time.  If we focus on the things we do have control over, we can make astronomical changes in our lives and the lives of others

Just my philosophical thought for the day

Having all of your teeth removed can be upsetting.  I see it all the time, unfortunately sometimes it’s necessary due to the amount of disease present.

What many people don’t realise is that dentures have been around for hundreds of years (actually the oldest evidence of dentures is thousands of years old!).  They were the best replacement for your teeth at the time.

Today, we consider dentures a replacement for having no teeth at all, not a replacement for your teeth.  This is where dental implants come in.  Dental implants can be used in a variety of ways to either stabilise your dentures and prevent them rocking or to the point you can actually throw your dentures in the bin.

I often hear patients tell me that they have been told they are not suitable for dental implants due to gum disease.

This simply isn’t true, and modern science suggests implants CAN be placed.  So what do you need to know?

Dental implants are susceptible to the same bacteria which cause gum disease.  The key to success is the gum disease needs to be under control, and as long as this is the case implants are incredibly successful.  You will need professional support on a regular basis, but this is true even if you have had gum disease and decide not to have an implant placed.

So if you’ve had gum disease in the past and have a plastic denture, you can now get rid of it for something which gives you much more of your chewing power back.

I absolutely love my job.  Dental sedation is yet another reason why I love coming to work, and here is why.

Over the weekend I was helping a colleague, I was performing sedation for very nervous patients whilst he was looking after their dental needs.

We saw one lady who needed to have her wisdom tooth remove and she was petrified.  As much as we tried to reassure her that she would be absolutely fine she was really in quite a state.  She also knew she couldn’t continue with problems with her wisdom teeth and that she needed to have the appointment done.

Her husband who accompanied her was close to tears watching his wife go into the treatment room.  I performed the sedation and within a few minutes she was completely relaxed and her fear had melted away.  This is what sedation does.

Her appointment went very smoothly and within a very short space of time I had the pleasure of telling her husband that the procedure was over and he could come through to be with her.

As she was recovering, her husband asked her what she remembered about having her wisdom tooth removed to which she replied ‘absolutely nothing’.  Both she and her husband were thrilled that she had the care she needed and would not remember any of it, it’s another great thing about sedation

I thought I’d treat myself to a bottle of rum recently.   I normally have a few rums I go for but I was persuaded to try something different.

I was a little apprehensive about this particular one, so my expectations were pretty low.  And I was pleasantly surprised as to how good it was, in fact it was beautiful!  You can see what I purchased below

I have to say it is very mellow and a well rounded rum.  I won’t go into the intricacies in case you’re not interested.  All I’ll say is that if you like this kind of stuff, this one is a good bet!
